Duo Lautensang - The Origin

The origins of “Duo Lautensang” go back many years. Initially consisting of three musicians, the name was created the evening before the performance at a historical event. A band name was sought for the musicians who had been playing together for a long time and knew each other from the Irish scene.

The instruments at the time were mainly guitar lute, Irish bouzouki, mandolin and occasionally whistle, combining the minnesang and dance melodies known from the medieval scene with the Irish tunes from the session.

When we started recording our CD “Zeitgeister” in 2010, there were already two of us, but we were supported on some tracks by our great bandmate from “Northbound” Edda Messer on mandolin and violin. One track on the CD even comes from “Northbound” with Ralf Hauer in full line-up.

Today we are on tour as “Duo Lautensang”. The guitar lute is still there depending on the program and we want to stay true to our line, but a lot has changed nonetheless.

The small bagpipes from Northumberland are being used more and more, and the trip to the country and the contact with the music scene there has increased the fascination.

I have often asked myself whether we should change the name, because some people might expect a different musical direction from “Lautensang”. I have decided to keep the name.

The name Duo Lautensang stands for versatility and good humor, for folk music and for us.
